The American photographer Slim Aarons, who snapped “attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places,” is on show at The Getty Images Gallery in Soho until the 7th May. Aarons’ photos capture the razzle-dazzle and the effortless and understated affluence of the jet set in some of the world’s most glamorous places: Palm Beach, Hollywood, Capri and Saint-Tropez.
Aarons would have been a perfect character in The Great Gatsby, snapping away at all of those alluring flappers on Gatsby’s blue lawns. Daisy would have been one of his muses, much like CZ Guest and Babe Paley were in real life.
Slim Aarons first worked as a combat photographer, witnessing the horrors of the frontline in World War II. He earned a Purple Heart in the process. When he was asked to return to combat photography, he was quoted as saying “I’ll only do a beach if it has a blonde on it.”
There are a lot of blondes and a lot of beaches in his vibrant photos. He only used natural light and didn’t use makeup artists and stylists. He always managed to capture chic living at its best. He was invited into the beau-monde not just as a photographer, but as a friend, and it shows in each and every snap.
I work for a residential development called The Keys in Quinta, a resort which is influenced by the transatlantic architecture of Palm Springs, Hollywood and Miami. It seemed fitting, therefore, that we would use Aarons’ photography as the inspiration for our Look Book photo shoot.
Our Look Book is full of Aarons-inspired photos, and we’re planning another one this year with a new collection of lifestyle images capturing “attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.” It’s easy to get your own Slim canvas: you can browse or buy at The Getty Gallery, 46 Eastcastle Street, or purchase online at Getty Images Gallery
